Renegade is a gold medal, award winning gin, from Doghouse Distillery. Inspired by music it is often described as “rock n roll in a bottle”! The Doghouse team are not fans of following the traditional route in distilling (or life), and Renegade Gin is contemporary on all levels. This rebellious gin is insanely session-able and deliciously herbaceous with a smooth, lingering finish. Renegade Made using 14 botanicals in total. All the usual ‘ginny’ suspects are there such as juniper, coriander, angelica, orris, however, what stands Renegade out from the crowd is the use of green, leafy botanicals such as bay, sage, winter savoury and cardamom to give it leafy fresh pine, herbaceousness on the palate. And a hint of warmth and spice is down to the addition of a West African pepper called Grains of Paradise. Unique herbaceous flavour profile, powerful and inviting aromatics, with a good amount of Juniper. Very smooth and easy drinking. Serve with Regular Indian Tonic and a sprig of rosemary. For a spash of colour add some orange peel but avoid slices of fruit.

Palate: Very enjoyable mouthfeel, rich and clean. Spicy cinnamon and coriander come through first, though swiftly develops a sweet fruitiness again. A touch grassy, too, in an almost funky-rhum-agricole way.

It was while enjoying music and possibly a little too much gin that the conversation began…..Nigel and Beverley with a background in the drinks industry, Jamie with a background in the music industry and his partner Tanya -each with an interest in both fields, so why not combine the two?……music and gin?……..and so with a little more music and a little more gin The Gael Signature Scottish Gin story began…..
Our Inspiration ‘The Gael’ is a Scottish fiddle tune which was originally written by Dougie MacLean as a commission for The Loch Ness Visitor Centre. It subsequently featured in the soundtrack for the movie The Last Of The Mohicans and is played by pipe bands and fiddlers the world over. It carries a special part in all our lives (Dougie is Jamie’s dad) and it seemed the natural musical choice to incorporate in our gin.
For our signature gin our aim was ‘Scottish’. Using Malted Barley we distil in a bespoke hybrid still (copper pot linked to copper column) five times to achieve a high quality base spirit. Our botanicals including Scottish Heather are added to the base spirit by a combination of compounding and macerating and they blend to give the unique smoothness, flavour and notes. The result is a smooth gin with a citrus/heather aroma followed by a subtle juniper/slightly spicy flavour and a warm finish.
