Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2012 70cl
View product
Login or register to orderBruichladdich Islay Barley 2012 70cl
The Islay barley series from Bruichladdich has always been a mission. For many years now they’ve sought to showcase the phenomenon of “terroir” in single malt whisky – the belief that soil, climate, micro-climate, geographic orientation, natural influences and local weather systems will influence the quality and flavour profile of the spirit, making it a unique expression of ‘place’. Bruichladdich Islay barley 2012 is distilled from barley grown on eight western and central Islay farms in 2011.
Taste – The texture and mouthfeel for a young whisky is a testament to the slow careful distillation and the quality of the Islay-grown barley. Refined and complex on the palate, the sleekness carries the fruit, cereal, and oak notes in succession as the flavours develop and deepen on the palate. The distillery character – the fruit and floral style are immediate and distinctive. The creaminess and the notes of porridge and rice pudding are malty and rich with brown sugar and dry straw. The fruit notes of pear, melon, and orange wrap around toffee and fudge sweetness, combining beautifully.
Nose – Delicate, light, floral notes and a creamy vanilla with rich, floral honey rise from the glass. Kiwi, melon, coconut, and ripe pear freshness combine beautifully into a fruity citrus style to provide that zesty, sweet signature of the Islay grain and the slow trickle distillation. Breathe a little deeper and the hint of spice from the combination of French and American oak gives a little highlight to the fruit. Be lead into the wonderful depth and sweetness, by the toffee and chocolate notes from the oak. With time more dimensions of this whisky are revealed, a dry grass and crushed cereal note. Then that distinctive fresh sea salt tang.
Finish – The finish is a salty sea breeze with lingering hints of the charred oak, sweet salty caramel, and brown sugar. The melon and creamy texture settle on the palate and take you to another place.
Character – The components at work in this dram come together to tell the story of where this whisky is from. It speaks of its place in the world with honesty and openness – Islay Barley, Islay distillation, and Islay maturation. Honesty and pride are at the heart of this dram.

This high provenance, heavily-peated single malt was distilled from Islay-grown barley in 2012. A total of eight Islay farms came together to harvest the 2011 crop for Port Charlotte over a tempestuous summer.
Nose – Initially a fresh linen and sandy sea breeze note stands out. Zesty lemon, a green fruit signature, apple sauce and crunchy pears follow. Floral geranium notes come through with sea pinks and gooseberry. then creamy coconut dipped
in chocolate opens up quickly with muddy peat smoke, burnt heather and peach skin. hints of vanilla and toasted malt. The aromas speak of the spirit, the distillation and the barley.
Palate – On the lips it’s soft and sweet, texturally there is a thin honey style that slips across the palate. Immediately there is more from the cask here, vanilla, milk chocolate and light cedar and black pepper. Warmed scones and honey from the malt wrapped in earthy smoke and soft apricot. creamy, minty, tablet brings a sweetness and a warm salty sand hint of Islay.
Finish – The finish is coconut and peat smoke, mildly iodine-y and hints of almond and geranium. The peat smoke gently fades away.
Character – Wonderfully balanced to show the fruity style of the spirit on the nose and the delicate influence of the cask on the palate. The peat smoke weaves its way gently through the whisky highlighting the softer sweeter notes. This 2012 vintage has a freshness and balance that tells the story of the place to which it belongs.

An exceptionally smooth Speyside malt in Olorosso sherry oak casks and bottled at 40.2%. Softly aged from 8 – 12 years, Creag Dhu is rich, spicy and delicate. Non-peated with a warm and remarkably long finish. The whisky is intrinsically connected to nature, the peatlands and the historic mountain that it is named after. Medium-bodied, with notes of date and walnut cake, spicy caramel, Oloroso sherry, and hints of earthy forest. A light base of malt, with toffee apple and a touch of smoke.
The Mountain of Creag Dhu (The Black Rocky Hill) is the iconic mountain by Strathmashie Distillery overlooking the River Spey in the Cairngorms National Park; steeped in ancient history and surrounded by beautiful and wild peatlands. At the geographical centre of Scotland, Creag Dhu has for centuries been an important meeting place of the clans. Its cliffs hid Bonnie Prince Charlie after the battle of Culloden and until recently have sheltered a long and colourful heritage of illicit distilling.
Saving the Peatlands Every bottle of Creag Dhu donates money to preserving the peatlands of Scotland, nature’s great carbon store to protect against global warming. The peatlands of Scotland with their golden eagles, red deer, plant life and other diverse wildlife are one of the last great wildernesses and nature reserves of Europe.
